Diabetes Community News

I’d like to start this post off with a personal note. I’m a big fan of the blog “Six Until Me,” and wanted to wish Kerri congratulations on her recent wedding! A lot of planning went into it and seems like the day was a magnificent success. It was cool to see pictures of her gorgeous wedding gown, complete with a stealthy ‘insulin pump pocket.’ You can read her great post about it here: Diabetes On My Wedding Day.

On a less personal and happy note, a new press release stated that with the increased use of Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests as a diagnosis tool, the numbers of people with pre-diabetes has increased. This comes as no big shock, but perhaps not relying solely on the Fasting Blood Sugar test will help more people stop the Diabetes train before it leaves the station. I found this press release on Melting Mama’s blog, and you can check it out here: New Survey Results Show Huge Burden of Diabetes. Interestingly, the survey found that men are 13% more likely to have Type 2 Diabetes, so start eating right and exercising, fellas! And of course, minorities are also much more likely to get Type 2, but that is not news, it’s just sad fact.

Awhile back I read an interesting study (which I will try to re-discover so I can post the link) that saw a STRONG connection between high A1C results and heart disease. The thesis of the study was basically that factors such as high cholesterol and blood pressure had much less to do with increased risk of heart disease than actual blood glucose levels as measured over time by the A1C test. So I was interested to read the post by a non-diabetic, Dana Blankenhorn, who talked about his hypoglycemic tendencies and wondered if they led directly to heart disease. Read his post here: Is Heart Disease Also Diabetes?.

And finally, we’ve had a lingering glitch that has not been allowing comments on our blog, so please stay tuned as we will have that fixed ASAP…
