Diabetes and the Flu

About six weeks ago I succumbed to peer pressure and went in for my flu shot. The doctor assured me that it was a mild flu season, and I left there feeling pretty good about myself for having taken the precaution. So of course, last week, I was down for the count for about 5 days with, you guessed it: the flu. The same doctor who had given me the shot said: “It’s a different strain; there’s lots of different strains.”
Well, as expected, my sugar levels went very high and I was on 20% more insulin and constantly bolusing to bring the numbers down. All I could think was: thank God it isn’t the stomach flu. I still had an appetite and could keep everything down. I’ve never had the stomach flu, knock on wood, and don’t want to imagine the challenges it poses for people with Diabetes.
I’m feeling much better this week and have my sugars back in check. Still taking INSUL-OPT Complete and still seeing my injection sites heal rapidly and my sugar numbers (when healthy) stay under good control.
Once again I feel for all the parents of children with Diabetes out there. It’s hard enough to care for a sick child, then add Diabetes and blood sugar control issues in there, talk about stressful! Gotta wonder, what did people do before the Internet? Because it’s such a help and relief to be able to connect with so many others online: so bless you all out there in cyberspace, and let’s keep on keepin’ on together!
